Preserving Properties Tax Credits Preservation in Progress Seibert-Fernsler Ridenour House French Lane Foultz House

Seibert-FernslerPreservation in ProgressWCHT learned that this 1790-1810 brick house was slated for demolition in 1998. The house is one of two early farmsteads on county-owned Black Rock Golf Course, both of which are in the National Register of Historic Places. The other farmstead was restored as living quarters for the manager of the course, while Seibert-Fernsler was rented for many years. Finally it was no longer habitable. The golf course board of directors planned demolition to facilitate a future nine-hole addition to the golf course. WCHT went to the Board of County Commissioners, who had not realized that the house was in the National Register, and worked with them to find a way to save the structure and return it to the tax rolls. On May 23, 2001, Greg Fortes purchased the house at auction. Greg began work on the house immediately. Easements will be placed on the property preserving the original fabric of the house when settlement occurs in January 2004. These easements will be held by the Maryland Historical Trust and will follow the property in the deed. The entire story is featured in the book, Architectural & Historic Treasures of Washington County, Maryland. |
